How it Works

The HBAA EnergyKey Program was developed in partnership with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and Southface Energy Institute. This voluntary program will give Alabama a statewide energy efficiency program developed by builders, for builders. The program stresses compliance with established energy benchmarks, with expansion to include water and waste reduction features, creating a truly “green” home potential.

Level 1: Advantage EnergyKey

  • Home built to 2006 IECC / 2006 IRC Energy Chapter
  • Builder-certified
  • Builder signs off on checklist; HBAA sends certificate
    upon receipt of completed checklist

Level 2: Star EnergyKey

  • Built to comply with Energy Star requirements
  • HERS rater signs off on certification

Level 3: Green EnergyKey (Fall 2007)

  • HERS rater signs off plus builder self-certifies with checklist
  • Snap inspections
  • Certified by Southface

Training requirements

(Training fee: $40 for HBAA members, $80 for non-members):
  • 4-hour initial course for Levels 1 and 2 certification
  • Additional 2-hour course for Level 3 certification
  • 2-hour CE course every year to maintain certification for all levels
